Goodyear Oxygene: a concept tyre to improve air quality

At the Geneva International Motor Show, Goodyear has presented a new concept tyre, Oxygene, designed to make urban mobility more practical and above all eco-friendly.

Sustainable future mobility

If a tyre that combats atmospheric pollution sounds like science fiction to you, this is exactly the vision presented by Goodyear at the International Motor Show in Geneva. The tyre, baptised “Oxygene” was inspired by the principles of the circular economy, and aims to live up to its name- quite literally.

Made from rubber powder from recycled tyres, the Oxygene has a unique structure, containing living moss in the sidewall. This airless, and therefore puncture-proof tyre has a 3-D printed tread designed to absorb water from the road surface and circulate it to the moss. The tyre “inhales” C02 from the air to feed the moss, which releases oxygen through photosynthesis. For a city the size of Paris, this would generate 3000 tonnes of oxygen and absorb more than 4000 tonnes of carbon dioxide annually.

“Like the concept designs Goodyear has presented at Geneva in the past, Oxygene is meant to challenge our thinking and help drive the debate around smart, safe and sustainable future mobility,” said Chris Delaney, President of Goodyear EMEA. “By contributing in this way to cleaner air generation, the tire could help enhance quality of life and health for city-dwellers.”

 

An autonomous connected tyre

Goodyear’s concept tyre has a number of other innovative tricks up its sleeve. In addition to facilitating photosynthesis, the tyre’s ability to absorb water from the road surface helps to improve wet grip. The energy generated during photosynthesis enables the tyre to power its own electronics, which is important as the Oxygene is a highly-connected tyre.

The tyre has a customisable light strip in the sidewall to warn road users and pedestrians of vehicle manoeuvres, as well as an artificial intelligence processing unit and numerous on-board sensors. It also uses a visible light communications system (or LiFi) for high-capacity mobile connectivity at the speed of light. This enables the Oxygene to connect to the Internet of Things and communicate with other vehicles and infrastructure, which is essential for future smart mobility systems.
