Two new tyres unveiled

After a 2017 season dominated by Mercedes driver Lewis Hamilton, Pirelli has unveiled its tyre selection for 2018. The new season will see the introduction of two new compounds, the “hyper-soft” and “super-hard”. Although new, in reality the super-hard takes the place of the previous “hard” tyre. After discussions with various teams and engineers, the Italian tyre manufacturer has decided to move a step softer with all of its slick tyres. The five slick tyres from the 2017 season will therefore still be part of the range, but in different and softer versions. The Cinturato rain tyres, suitable for driving in wet conditions, will also be available, again with a few new technical improvements from Pirelli.

A rainbow of tyres

Like existing F1 tyres, as well as some of Pirelli’s passenger tyres, these new specially designed P Zero tyres will each have their own colour. The Italian tyre manufacturer has decided to change its colour scheme a little compared with last year, and will now provide tyres in all the colours of the rainbow.

The new "hard” tyres will be blue, leaving orange for the “super-hard” compound, whereas the new “super-soft” tyres will be pink. This follows the appearance of pink tyres at the US Grand Prix in October, to promote Breast Cancer Awareness Month. The vibrant new line-up will make its debut on 25 March 2018 at the Australian Grand Prix in Melbourne.
